The Communication Technologies Division of the CTTC is searching for interested candidates in an Early Stage Research position (PhD student) in its Smart Energy Efficient Communication Technologies (SMARTECH) Department in the famework of the Marie-Curie ETN 5GSTEPFWD project (the available position is subjected to the final approval by the EC of an amendment in the 5GSTEPFWD project and, consequently, the successful applicant will not be notified before the amendment is approved by the EC.) The candidate must hold a Master degree in telecommunications, electrical, computer engineering or related disciplines, and should have experience in the area of wireless technologies and/or networks.


The successful candidate will conduct both academic and experimental system research and will design and evaluate the performance of an optical-wireless infrastructure, through the determination of the optimal topology of an mmWave-based converged optical-wireless network that provides high-speed connectivity to an extensive small cell population. Furthermore, the ESR will work on the development and evaluation of SDN-based handoff algorithms that target to provide maximum coverage, routing simplification and improved throughput. 


We are looking for highly motivated, enthusiastic junior scientists, with a MSc in electrical engineering or related fields, aiming at significantly improving their career perspectives in both public and private sectors. Excellent research skills and analytical abilities are required, fluency in English (spoken and written), proactive communication skills and problem solving as part of a team, solid programming skills, strong record keeping, great work ethic and initiatives are essential characteristics. Previous experience in fields related to the specific positions is a plus.


The positions is fully funded for 3 years by the European Commission under the H2020 Marie Curie Innovative Training Network Programme. Candidates should be in their first four years of their research career (measured from the date when they obtained the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate), and not having awarded a doctoral degree. Candidates could be of any nationality but not having resided or carried out their main activity in Spain for more than 1 year in the past 3 years. The recruited ESRs will be highly encouraged to enroll to the Ph.D. programme of local universities (UOC, UPC, UB, etc.).
