CALL 23-2020-1 - RESEARCH POSITION AT THE GEODESY AND NAVIGATION DEPARTMENT OF CTTC

10 November 2020 - Expires: 12 November 2020

The Geomatics Division of CTTC invites applications for a researcher at postdoctoral level in its Geodesy and Navigation Department. The contract will be funded by the Catalan Government (ACCIO – Generalitat de Catalunya) through the competitive Tecniospring INDUSTRY call, see http://catalonia.com/innovate-in-catalonia/tecniospringplus/tecniospringcall.jsp as a reference.

TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION OF THE ACTIVITY

We are looking for a postdoc researcher interested in i) remote sensing techniques to monitor sea water quality, ii) advanced deep learning solutions and iii) marine biology to support the data analysis and guide the interpretation of results.

In this context, the project general objective is to design and implement Anomaly Detection (AD) methods based on the analysis of time series of single and multiple water quality indicators and ocean information, derived from Remote Sensing and in-situ data, using advanced machine learning techniques. These tools will be used to understand phenomena that occur around the aquaculture sites and to identify the source such as exogenous events (storms), the interaction with other systems (agricultural systems), extreme biological phenomena (blooms) or other anthropogenic phenomena.  The goal of the study is to check if the environment itself is resilient and accepts the changes due to aquaculture.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Interested candidates must be strongly motivated and hold a PhD in the areas of mathematics, electronic engineering, telecommunications, geoinformation, computer science, or related areas. They should demonstrate oral and written Spanish and English communication skills.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate background in Machine learning, optimization, statistics and data mining.

Researchers must comply with the conditions detailed in the following link: http://catalonia.com/innovate-in-catalonia/tecniospringplus/tecniospringcall.jsp Mainly: The researcher must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the deadline for the submission of applications. Hold a doctoral degree and two additional years of full-time research experience after obtaining it; or have at least six years of full-time equivalent research experience, including the period of research training, after obtaining the degree which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate. Tecniospring INDUSTRY also welcomes experienced researchers who come after a career break. It is considered that researchers have had a career break when they were not active in research for a continuous period of at least twelve months within the eighteen months immediately prior to the deadline for submission of proposals.

SELECTION CRITERIA

Interested candidates will be evaluated considering the following aspects:

  • Machine learning experience.
  • Statistics and R programming skills.
  • Python.
  • Previous research experience: publication track and previous R&D projects.
  • English and Spanish proficiency.
  • Catalan skills are appreciated.

CONDITIONS

The contract is subject to the acceptance of the proposal to be presented at ACCIO. The duration of the contract will be 2 years, starting between March and June 2021. The selected candidates will prepare jointly with CTTC their candidature to be submitted to the competitive TECHNIOSPRING INDUSTRY call (deadline: 16th November 2020).

Fellowships fund the salary and research costs of the researcher. According to fellopwship rules the ACCIÓ contribution for the labor costs is an amount of €58.500/year.

Researchers interested in joining the Geomatics Division should send their curriculum vitae and the names and addresses of at least two referees to this online application.

The deadline is the 12th November 2020.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Researchers interested in joining the Geodesy and Navigation Department should send their curriculum vitae, including list of publications, and the names and addresses of at least two referees. These documents should be sent in PDF format through this online application, which will remain open up to 12th November 2020. CVs and any other information gathered during this process will be handled confidentially.

ABOUT CTTC

The Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC), in Castelldefels – Barcelona, is a growing and well-funded research institution fostering excellence and diversity. CTTC offers a highly international environment at an exceptionally attractive location. As a research centre in telecommunications technologies CTTC provides a fertile environment for research cooperation and innovation between different disciplines. More specifically, the Geomatics Division develops what is understood as the “Geomatics discipline”, that is to say, a variety of techniques that integrate sensors that capture data and images (basically cameras and other remote sensors) with methods for the treatment, analysis, interpretation, diffusion and storage of geographic information. It connects various traditional disciplines, like geodesy or cartography with more recently developed fields like remote sensing, satellite navigation and latest information and communication technologies. As a result, geomatics allows us today to obtain information about the Earth and her atmosphere globally and within very short time. For more information, please visit http://geomatics.cttc.es/.

Inside the Geomatics division, the Geodesy and Navigation Department (GEON) does research in the integration of any available sensor for local geodetic applications both in their geometric and physical aspects. The GEON staff constitutes a multidisciplinary team with strong backgrounds in cartography, geodesy, geography, mathematics, electronic engineering and computer science. Over the years, the GEON Department has developed theoretical, software development, hardware integration and educational capabilities, through the realization of applied research projects and continuous education programmes. For more information, please visit: http://geomatics.cttc.es/integrated-geodesy-and-navigation/.

CTTC offers a young and multi-cultural environment aimed at fostering excellent research and development activities, providing access to an outstanding research network, top-tech labs, and all tools needed to conduct top-quality research and development activities.

CTTC seeks to increase the number of women in those areas where they are underrepresented and therefore explicitly encourages women to apply.

CTTC is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals.
