One Early Stage Researcher (ESR) position (of a total of 3 positions offered at CTTC under this training program) under a European Union Marie Curie Initial Training program (FP7-PEOPLE-2013-ITN) ADVANTAGE is available at the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) located in Castelldefels, Barcelona, Spain.

The selected candidate will work within the M2M Communications Department, under the supervision of Dr. Jesus Alonso-Zarate (www.jesusalonsozarate.com).

The ESR will do research on wireless communications for smart grids. Main goals will be to design, analyse and implement autonomous and automatic communications techniques for smart grid systems and study new communications approaches suited to the range of data rates and delay tolerances in smart grid.

Highly motivated, excellent candidates should hold a valid Masters degree and be eligible to start a PhD.

The selected candidate shall be eligible for immediate admission on the PhD programme the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya (UPC), which is located in the same campus as the CTTC.

In addition, candidates should comply with the Marie Curie mobility requirements:

- Be within four years of the first degree.

- Do not have lived, worked, or studied in Spain for more than 12 months out of the 3 years immediately prior to the start of the work.

The position is of 3 years in duration and has a salary between 33.000 and 37.000 euro (gross salary), depending on the individual familiar status, as specified by the Marie Curie program.

Job Description

This ESR position is one of 13 positions offered under the ADVANTAGE ITN project. A network of 13 ESRs will work in a coordinated manner all around Europe for 3 years. This is a unique opportunity to grow your professional career as a researcher.

In order to make smart grid system autonomous, an autonomous communication between network elements must be facilitated, which falls within the area of machine-to-machine (M2M) communications. M2M communications are essentially different from human-based communications and thus require a revisit of the design of current communication networks that are not optimized for M2M traffic. Transmission of small amounts of data, the scheduled periodic transmission of data, the combination of delay-constrained (e.g., fault-detection) and delay-tolerant (e.g., meter reading) applications are some of the challenges that need to be tackled in the coming years. This research project will design and evaluate novel communication protocols at the NET, MAC, and PHY layers to fit these unique requirements

The ESR on this project will benefit from the partnership between academic institutions and industrial partners. They will attend initial school training events and thus be exposed to the research activities of all participants at regular six monthly progress meetings. They will engage in training events, visits to companies and secondments to other project partners.
