The RAI, with the co-sponsorship of the “Pro Rebus Academiae” Foundation, annually announces the “Agustín de Betancourt” and “Juan López de Peñalver” awards for researchers or professionals who have made original and relevant contributions in any of the areas of the engineering, valuing specifically in both awards, the aspects related to technology transfer. Applicants must be under 40 years of age as of January 1, 2019 and maintain a relationship with Spain, where they have developed a significant part of their work.

This year, 2019, the RAI has failed the “Agustín de Betancourt y Molina 2019” award in favor of Jesús Alonso-Zárate, research member of the Technological Center of Telecommunications of Catalonia (CTTC). The CTTC is a CERCA and TECNIO accredited center located in Castelldefels, Barcelona. He is the head of the Machine to Machine Communications (M2M) department since 2013, from which he leads various projects in the field of 5G technology and the Internet of Things (IoT). Currently, he is the coordinator of the European project 5GCroCo, funded by the European Commission under the umbrella of the Horizon 2020. This project, participated by the European telecommunications and automotive industry, has a budget of 17 million euros for testing 5G pilots for cooperative, connected, and autonomous mobility (CCAM).

This individual award recognizes Jesús Alonso-Zárate for his career and for his notorious research work in the field of engineering, leading to laying the foundations and / or fostering new developments and innovations in the field of telecommunications.

The award ceremony will take place on November 19 at the RAI headquarters in Madrid.
