Nikolaos Bartzoudis, Xavier Mestre and Miquel Payaró, CTTC researchers, receive the 2020 EURASIP JWCN Best Paper Award
As part of their activities in the FP7-EMPhAtiC and 5G PPP-Flex5Gware projects, the three CTTC researchers co-authored the following research paper that appeared in the Jan. 2017 issue of the EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking (JWCN) and that has now received the 2020 EURASIP JWCN Best Paper Award:
Robin Gerzaguet, Nikolaos Bartzoudis, Leonardo Gomes Baltar, Vincent Berg, Jean-Baptiste Doré, Dimitri Ktenas, Oriol Font-Bach, Xavier Mestre, Miquel Payaró, Michael Färber, Kilian Roth, “The 5G candidate waveform race: a comparison of complexity and performance”, EURASIP Journal on Wireless Communications and Networking, volume 2017, Article number 13, Jan. 2017.
In this work, which featured an uncommon mixture of theoretical and practical aspects, the authors proposed a comparison of several 5G waveform candidates (OFDM, UFMC, FBMC and GFDM) under a common framework. In particular, their spectral efficiency, power spectral density, peak-to-average power ratio and robustness to asynchronous multi-user uplink transmission was assessed. Moreover, the implementation complexity of the different waveforms was evaluated and compared. In addition to the complexity analysis, the suitability of FBMC for specific 5G use cases via two experimental implementations was demonstrated. One of the main conclusions of the paper was to highlight the benefits of the FBMC-based waveforms for 5G use cases even if, mostly due to time-to-market constraints, these were finally not adopted in the 3GPP standard.
The award will be handed at the Awards Ceremony (part of the Opening Ceremony) of EUSIPCO 2020.
