Lorenza Giupponi received the Telecommunications Engineering degree from University of Rome “La Sapienza” in July 2002 and the PhD from the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in 2007. She joined the Radio Communications Group of UPC in 2003 with a grant of the Spanish Ministry of Education, in the context of the “Formación Profesorado Universitario” program. During 2006 and 2007 she was assistant professor in UPC. In September 2007 she joined the CTTC where she is currently a Senior Researcher in the Mobile Networks Department of the Communication Networks Division. Her research experience falls in the area of RAN and spectrum management, self-organizing networks (SON), LTE, LTE-A, LTE-U, LAA, NR, NR-U, NR V2X, O-RAN, mmWave, simulation modelling.
Her technical experience is enriched by a wide management experience. Since 2007 she is also a voting member of the Executive Committee of CTTC, where she acts as the Director of Institutional Relations, in charge of yearly reporting to the patrons, yearly productivity incentives to the research divisions, relations with academia and local institutions, outreach activities. Since 2015 she is a member of the Executive Committee of the ns3 consortium and she leads the activities of CTTC in the context of ns-3, as main developers and maintainers of the LTE and NR modules. Specifically she contributed to foster the design and development of LTE module and initiated the new NR module, which are widely used open source network simulators in the research community. She was the responsible of the LAA coexistence evaluation with WiFi, carried out by the WFA, during LAA standardization in Release 13. She was the spanish representative in different NATO groups in the area of cognitive radio and networks (IST077-RTG035, IST104-RTG050).
From the scientific perspective, she is the co-recipient of the IEEE Consumer Communications and Networking Conference 2010 (IEEE CCNC 2010), of the IEEE third International workshop on Indoor and Outdoor Femto Cells 2011 2011 and of 2018 IEEE Wireless Commun. and Networking Conference best paper awards. Two of her Transactions journals have been highly cited and selected by IEEE ComSoc among the BEST READINGS in the areas of Radio Resource Management and Cognitive Radio, respectively. Over the years, she has led and participated in multiple EU (in FP6, FP7 and H2020, 5GPPP), national (she was the Principal Investigator of three projects funded by the Spanish national research program) and industrial projects. She was the Principal Investigator and/or promoter of multiple projects funded by: Interdigital (ID_mmwave and ID_NRU) in the area of NR and NR-U, Qatar National Research Fund, in the area od SON, the WiFi Alliance (WALAA/WALAA2) and Spidercloud Wireless (SCALAA/SCALAA2), in the area of unlicensed LTE, Huawei Technologies in Sweden (Huawe_ML_SON, FOREST 5G), in the area of Machine Learning based RAN, the National Institute of Standard and Technology in US (PublicSafetyNIST, NR V2X), in the area of Public Safety LTE and NR vechicular to Evrerything in sub 7 GHz and mmWave bands, and the Lawrence Livermore National Lab in US (S3_LLNL), in the area of LTE/NR dynamic spectrum sharing. She has supervised/is supervising 3 already defended PhD thesis (students are currently in Orange Lab in France, INSA Lyon, in France, and Elisa in Finland), 3 in course, and multiple postdocs. She is an Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and an IEEE Senior Member. Her h-index is 29.
