Raül Muñoz is graduated in telecommunications engineering in 2001 and received a Ph.D. degree in telecommunications in 2005, both from Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. He worked as undergraduate researcher at Telecom Italia Lab (Turin, Italy) in 2000, where he developed his engineering degree project. In 2001, we worked as assistant professor at the UPC, giving the course of optical communications lab in telecommunications engineering degree.  In 2002, he joined the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) in 2002. Currently, he is Senior Researcher (since February 2007), Head of the Optical Networks and Systems (ONS) Department (since April 2013), and Manager of the Communication Networks Division (since April 2013). ONS Department is composed of 8 permanent researchers and several Research Assistants associated to research projects, reaching a team around 15 people. Previously, He was the Coordinator from the Optical Networking Area from July 2005 to March 2013, and Coordinator of ADRENALINE testbed® (2002 – 2009).  He was also giving support to the European proposals management and was  the CTTC representative at the Board of the 5G Infrastructure Association (5GIA) (https://5g-ia.eu), the Steering Board of the Wireless World Research Forum (WWRF) (https://www.wwrf.ch/), and the Networld2020 European Technology Platform (ETP) (https://www.networld2020.eu/) form January 2015 to September 2019. During this period, he was involved in different activities that generated several white papers and positioning papers on 5G in Europe.

Since 2000, he has participated in over forty R&D projects funded by the European Commission’s Framework Programmes (H2020, FP7, FP6, FP5, CELTIC and ITEA) and the Spanish National research programmes (Retos Investigacón I+D+i, Proyectos de Investigación Fundamental no orientada, Proyectos I+D, Red Temática, CENIT, PROFIT). In particular, it is worth highlighting the participation in several H2020 5GPPP projects dealing with 5G infrastructures (packet/optical transport and distributed cloud/edge computing) and services (NFV network services and network slicing for verticals) such as INSPIRE-5G+, 5GCroCo, blueSPACE, 5GTANGO.

He has been the Principal Investigator (PI) of several Spanish research projects: four Proyectos I+D: RESPLANDOR, DORADO, FARO and DESTELLO; one International Complementary Action (ACI) with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) in Japan. He has also been the Project Manager (PM) of two European projects, the coordinated EU-Japan STREP project (STRAUSS, 608528) within FP7, and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (MSCA-ITN) project (ONFIRE,  765275) within the H2020 framework programme. Additionally, he has been the CTTC Principal Investigator of eight European projects (H2020 INSPIRE-5Gplus and blueSPACE, FP7 IDEALIST, STRONGEST, and BONE, FP6 NOBEL2 and NOBEL, and ITEA TBONES). He has also participated and led research projects with the industry.

He has participated in the organization of several conferences, serving as general chair (ONDM 2020, WWRF39) and Technical Programme Committee (TPC) chair (ONDM2019, ECOC 2015,  EUCNC 2014, NOC 2012), as well organizer in panels, workshops and symposia (ONDM2020, ONDM 2019, EUCNC 2017, EUCNC 2015). He has been an active member of the technical program committee of various networking conferences such as ICC, GLOBECOM, IPOP, ONDM, EUCNC and ECOC (2014, 2016-), as well as  reviewer of top-leading journals and magazines in the field such as IEEE journal of Lightwave Technologies (JLT) and Journal of Optical Communications and Networking (JOCN), IEEE Communications magazine and IEEE Network Magazine. He also served as Guest editor for the JLT ECOC2015 special issue, JOCN ONDM2020 special issue and Springer Photonic Network Communications (PNET) Journal ONDM2019 Special Issue.

He has served as evaluator for the National research agencies of Spain (ANEP, Comisiones TEC-TCM), and Luxemburg (FNR). His research interests include control and service management architectures (SDN, NFV, GMPLS, PCE, MEC) for future optical transport networks with cloud and edge computing. He has published over 70 journal papers, 250 international conference papers, 1 book chapter and 2 patents in this field. He is IEEE Senior Member since 2012, and member of the IEEE communications society and Photonics society.
