Raul Munoz is graduated in telecommunications engineering in 2001 and received a Ph.D. degree in telecommunications in 2005, both from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC), Spain. After working as undergraduate researcher at Telecom Italia Lab (Turin, Italy) in 2000, and as assistant professor at the UPC in 2001, he joined the Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC) in 2002. Currently, he is Senior Researcher, Head of the Optical Network and System Department, and Manager of the Communication Networks Division.

Since 2000, he has participated in over 40 R&D projects funded by the Spanish National research programmes and the European Commission’s Framework Programmes (H2020, FP7, FP6, FP5, CELTIC and ITEA) ) and the Spanish National research programmes (Proyecto I+D, Red Temática, CENIT, PROFIT).  He has been the coordinator of several Spanish research projects (4 Proyectos I+D/CYCIT: RESPLANDOR, DORADO, FARO and DESTELLO and one International Complementary Action (ACI) with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology – NICT-  in Japan) and two European projects, the coordinated EU-Japan STREP project (STRAUSS, 608528) within FP7, and the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks (MSCA-ITN)  project (ONFIRE,  765275) within the H2020 framework programme.

He has participated in the organization of several conferences (ONDM 2020 General chair, ONDM2019 TPC chair, WWRF39 chair, ECOC 2015 TPC chair, EUCNC 2014 Track chair, NOC 2012 TPC chair) and has been elected as academic member of the Board of the 5G Infrastructure Association (2017-2018), and the Steering Board of the Wireless World Research Forum – WWRF (2016-2017) and the Networld2020 ETP (2017-2018). He also served as vice-chair of the EU FP7 Technology Cluster on Converged and Optical Networks (CaON).  I am an active member of the technical program committee of various networking conferences such as INFOCOM, OFC, ICC, and GLOBECOM, and I was the co-recipient of eleven best-paper awards. He is also an active member of the technical program committee of various networking conferences such as ECOC, EUCNC, IPOP, OFC, ICC, and GLOBECOM, as well as

He has served as evaluator for the National research agencies of Spain (ANEP) and Luxemburg (FNR). His research interests include control and service management architectures (SDN, NFV, GMPLS, PCE, MEC) for future optical transport networks with cloud and edge computing. He has published over 70 journal papers, 240 international conference papers, and 2 patents in this field. He is IEEE Senior Member since 2012.
