During last years, novel protocols and data models are arising to control and monitor optical network equipment. This Short Course will offer an overview and hands-on experience on programming the necessary tools to control and monitor the network equipment. Part A will consist firstly on an overview on YANG data modelling language, which will be introduced with pyang. Part B, NETCONF protocol will be presented. Client and server software will be developed using different tools such as confd and netconf library. Part C focuses on OpenROADM data models and their usage on devices and interfaces. Part D evolves from network equipment to optical network control and monitoring, by introducing RESTconf interfaces such as ONF T-API 2.0, OpenDayLight or ONOS. Part E presents gRPC protocol for network monitoring using pyNMS and pyangbind. Finally, OpenConfig is presented and focus will be on optical-transport and telemetry.
