The Spanish Thematic Network of Multilayer IP over Transport Networks (rt-multilayer) started on December 2006. It was led by the UPC with a contract reference TEC2006-27651-E. The main objective of the network is to integrate the research on different architecture models, particularly based on IP protocols, carried out on Spanish universities and research centres. Specifically, the network focuses on doing research from a twofold perspective, namely, design and development of network elements and control and management functions to optimally devise the integration of both the IP technologies and the high-capacity optical layer. In this context, the main conducted activities are listed as follows:
- Routing of IP over optical networks
- Inter and Intra-domain optical routing
- Wavelength assignment
- Horizontal signalling involving a single layer
- Vertical signalling involving two or more layers
- Control plane architecture
- Optical packet switching
- Optical burst switching
- Optical switch architecture
- Management and monitoring of IP traffic
Besides the above technical targets, other relevant outcomes such as seeking for synergies between the several groups, promoting exchange of produced works, collaborations, joint activities, etc. are highly pursued.
