SmartWorld Lab.

SmartWorld is an End-to-End (E2E) demonstration platform for the Internet of Things (IoT) developed by the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) Communications Department at CTTC (M2M@CTTC) in Barcelona, Spain.

SmartWorld is an innovative and cloud-based solution which integrates various wireless communication technologies into a single platform. It integrates Low Throughput Networks, 2G/3G cellular communications, LTE, WiFi, ZigBee, low-power long-range transmissions (at sub-GHz bands), and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) all together, and operating in a seamless manner. Data travels from the sensors, through wireless networks, to reach the cloud in the Internet. Then, remote access from all kind of user devices such as tablets, smartphones, web-clients, or wearable devices is possible to create an unprecedented number of innovative applications.


Even though SmartWorld can support any end-user application, it has already deployed 3 demos to show its potential:

  • Smart Parking; to detect the presence of a car in a parking spot, store the information in the cloud, and read the data from a tablet to show, integrated with google-maps, the occupancy of all parking places in a given area.
  • Indoor / Outdoor Geo-Fencing: using iBeacon technology for indoor, and GPS for outdoor environments, it is possible to take actions depending on the position of a device. This enables applications such as personalized marketing, secured access without use of papers or identification cards, etc.
  • Security (theft control): devices with a fixed position can send alarm messages when removed from their pre-defined location. This applications exploits a light sensor, so that in case of lack of light, the devices cooperate together to detect the theft.
